South African transport workers unions and their employer Transnet, South Africa's largest transport company, agreed on a conciliatory wage hike proposal submitted by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration of South Africa, bringing the ten-day strike to an end. Union members agreed to return to work at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

The strike which started on May 10 had paralyzed the nation's port and rail operations and hit exports of metals, fruit and wine to Europe and Asia after 85 percent of Transnet's 54,000 workers joined the walk-off.
