Westbound container trade from Asia to Europe enjoyed a 55.5% surge in volume in February 2010 totaling 968,000 TEUs, compared with 617,920 TEUs for the same period last year, according to statistics released by the European Liner affairs Association (ELAA). The figure reflects an uptrend in real volume as well as a rebound from the same months in 2009 which suffered a 32% year-on-year plunge.
Eastbound containers from Europe to Asia also soared by 26.1% on year to 452,600 TEUs in February.
The freight rate index also rose to 114 in February with the westbound rate for 2008 as 100, much higher than January's103. The eastbound rate remained almost the same level as January at 96.
