Container throughput at South Korean ports totaled 1.587 million TEUs in March, up 19.6% compared 1.327 million TEUs for the same period in 2009, according to the Ministry of Land Transport and Maritime Affairs.
Reflecting the economic recovery, export and import cargo increased 19.2% from a year earlier to 1 million TEUs, while transshipment containers rose 17.1% on year to 553,000 TEUs, the largest monthly performance after the global economic crisis.
The port of Busan, which accounts for 73% of the nation’s total container volume, handled 651,000 TEUs of export and import cargo and 517,000 TEUs transshipment cargo in March.
