Container shipments between ten Asian countries and territories (Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia) excluding mainland China and South Korea totaled 408,000 TEUs in February, representing a 21% increase compared with 337,000 TEUs for the same month in 2009.

Exports from Japan to the Asian nations soared 40% in February from a year earlier to 108,000 TEUs while Japan's containerized imports which had been making a slower recovery got the momentum with a year-on-year increase of 24.7% to 96,000 TEUs.

For the first two months of the year, intra-Asia box traffic climbed 26.5% from the same period last year to 850,000 TEUs. Japan's exports for the period showed a whopping 43.9% year on year to 213,000 TEUs and its imports increased 16.6% on year to 193,000 TEUs.
