A total of 6.91 billion tons of cargoes were handled at ports in China in 2009, which represented an increase of 8.2 percent from the previous year.

In breakdown, 4.73 billion tons were transported to and from coastal ports, up 7.7 percent, and 2.18 billion tons to and from inland river ports, up 8.8 percent.

The overall volume of containerized shipments processed at Chinese ports was 121 million TEUs, a decline of 6 percent from a year earlier.

Coastal ports were responsible for 109 million TEUs, down 5.9 percent year on year, and inland river ports, 12 million TEUs, down 7.4 percent.
