Spot rates for containerized shipments from China continued to rise last week amid pre-holiday rush of export shipments. The China Containerized Freight Index (CCFI) issued by the Shanghai Shipping Exchange on January 29 stood at 1057.78 points, up 1.7% from the previous week. The new Shanghai Containerized Freight Index rose 7.2% from the previous week to 1333.93 points as of January 29.

The CCFI from Shanghai to Europe and the Mediterranean routes was 1670.45 and 1813.9 points last weekend, up 2.7% and 3.3% from a week earlier, respectively. The basic freight rates (ocean freight plus additional charges ) from Shanghai to Europe and Mediterranean ports were US$1,992 per TEU and $1,899 per TEU, up $143 and $161 from a week before, respectively.

In the transpacific trades, the market demand for transport has been strong as well. The basic freight rates from Shanghai to the U.S. West Coast and East Coast were $1,988 per TEU and $3,081 per TEU, up $185 and $227 on week, respectively.

On the Shanghai ? Japan route, the volume continued to drop last week, but the tariff was basically stable with CCFI at 696.32 points, almost the same as the previous week.
