China’s Ministry of Transport (MOT) recently announced that 99,593,000 TEUs of containers were moved to and from the nation in the first five months (January-May), which improved 5.4% year on year. Container throughput was favorable at both coastal and inland river ports, with the former going up 5.5% to 88,560,800 TEUs and the latter, up 4.4% to 11,032,000 TEUs.

By ports, Shanghai processed 16,890,600 TEUs, up 4.2%, enjoying the largest share of the pie. Ranked second was Ningbo-Zhoushan, which handled 11,049,900 TEUs, up 8%. To and from Shenzhen, which finished in third place, 10,033,000 TEUs were moved, up 2.6%. Containers exceeded the 10-million-TEU line at all of the top three ports.

The fourth-busiest container port was Guangzhou, to and from which 8,632,500 TEUs were transported, up 9.3%. As for others, Qingdao handled 7,780,700 TEUs, up 3.2%, coming in fifth place. It was followed by Tianjin, which processed 6,392,100 TEUs, up 5.7%. Xiamen ranked seventh place, to and from which 4,232,500 TEUs were carried, up 8.8%. Dalian boasted the eighth-largest container volume, which amounted to 3,935,600 TEUs, up 0.5%. The ninth place was taken by Yingkou, which processed 2,589,000 TEUs, up 1.2%. Lianyungang came at the bottom of the top 10, but throughput fell 0.4% to 1,973,000 TEUs. The lineup of the 10 leading ports remained unchanged.
