The total value of products traded between Japan and China in the first half (January-June) of this year was US$142.261 billion, decreasing 3.9% from a year earlier and suffering a year-on-year decline for four consecutive six-month terms, according to a report released by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).

On a value scale, exports from Japan to China fell 4.5% to $66.379 billion, but the contraction improved to a single digit. Electrical equipment, the leading commodity that China imports from Japan, sank 2.2%. Integrated circuits (ICs), which are used for storage elements as well as other parts and components of smartphones, swell, but electric circuits and other equipment, and heavy electrical machinery diminished more notably from the first half of 2015.

Imports to Japan from China slid 3.4% to $75.882 billion, but the slide was smaller than a year earlier. Major items all continued to decrease. Electrical appliance, which enjoyed the largest share of 28.5% of the pie, went down 3.6%, as photoelectric cells declined more severely.

As a consequence, the JETRO report, which had been complied from trade statistics from the Ministry of Finance (MOF) of Japan and similar from China’s General Administration of Customs, added that Japan trade deficit increased 5.4% year on year to $9.531, meaning the economy suffered a trade shortfall for the ninth consecutive terms, or since the first half of 2012.
