In preparation for the kickoff of the proposed ASEAN Economic Community at in 2015, Myanmar's Ministry of Rail Transportation has laid out a policy to construct dry ports as well as to repair rail tracks in a bid to expand rail transportation of ocean containers.

Dry ports will be built on three sites in Yangon and Mandalay at the initial stage. The ministry will soon invite local and international enterprises for an open bid for the project. The construction is expected to be finished by May 2015.

Regarding rail repairs, the state-run railways body plans to renovate 13 bridges on the Yangon – Mandalay leg to ensure access of containers from ocean ports to dry ports or vice versa by train. The repair work will be completed by June 2015.
