The Port of Osaka handled 36.48 million tons of international shipments in 2013, enjoying a year-on-year growth of 0.7%. Domestic cargo increased 0.5% to 50.47 million tons. The overall volume at the port reached 86.95 million tons, hiking 0.6%.

As for oceangoing containers, Osaka exported and imported 32.23 million tons in total, which went up 3.8% from a year earlier. On a TEU scale, they amounted to an all-time high of 2,193,939 TEUs, up 3.5%. Meanwhile, 291,080 TEUs of domestic containers were moved to and from other ports in Japan, up 0.6%. Overall container throughput at the port was brisk, inflating 3.1% to 2,485,000 TEUs.

Focusing on international shipments, exports hiked 3.1% to 8.98 million tons, registering the first year-on-year expansion in three years. Containers accounted for 7.22 million tons, which swelled 6%. Imports almost leveled off, totaling 27.5 million tons, of which containers amounted to 25.01 million tons, rising 3.2%. In terms of TEU, outbound containers strengthened 4.3% to 983,000 TEUs, and inbound containers, 2.8% to 1,211,000 TEUs.
