The Shanghai Shipping Freight Exchange Co. (SSEFC) officially launched China's first container freight derivatives on June 28. The platform allows participants to hedge their risk on a six-month forward basis on the two key container shipping routes for Chinese exports from Shanghai to Europe and Shanghai to the U.S. West Coast ports, allowing local exporters and shipping companies to manage growing volatility in freight rates.

The forward contracts are based on container freight rates on the Shanghai ? Europe and Shanghai ? U.S. West Coast routes on SSEFC's website on Wednesday.
