U.S. container imports from 10 major Asian economies amounted to 1.62 million TEUs in April (based on volumes at ports of origin), down 2.3% month on month and down 3.9% year on year, according to statistics compiled by Descartes Datamyne from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data. In the first four months (January-April), they totaled 6.55 million TEUs, down 3.9% year on year. Overall imports to the U.S. came to 2.28 million TEUs in April, down 5.1% year on year.
In April, imports from China decreased 11.1% to 776,441 TEUs, a year-on-year contraction for 12 months in a row, but managed to hold the leading share of the pie. On the other hand, those from Vietnam surged 14.1% to 243,702 TEUs, an expansion for 31 consecutive months. Containers from South Korea declined 4.6% to 196,244 TEUs. Those from Singapore jumped 34.2% to 84,821 TEUs, growth for six months running. Imports from Singapore swelled 2.2% to 81,723 TEUs. Containers from Japan soared 12.8% to 39,911 TEUs, coming in eighth place.
