The Tokyo Port and Harbor Office of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT)’s Kanto Regional Development Bureau will spend a budget of ¥5.3 billion (US$33 million) to advance the development of a new container terminal, relevant facilities, and a road at the Port of Tokyo’s Central Outer Breakwater area, the bureau recently announced.
Under development in the Central Outer Breakwater area to maintain smooth logistics are the 16-meter-draft, earthquake-resistant container terminal and the harbor road that will link the area with Ariake. To this end, the Tokyo Port and Harbor Office is working to address a capacity shortage at the Port of Tokyo’s container terminals and an enlargement in containership sizes and growth in traffic on trunk trade lanes. The container terminal and the harbor road are both expected for completion in fiscal 2029 (April 2029-March 2030).
