U.S. container imports from 10 major Asian economies amounted to 1.6 million TEUs in November (based on volumes at ports of origin), down 6.7% year on year, the third consecutive month of decline, according to statistics compiled by Descartes Datamyne from data provided by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). From October, they shrank 4.9%. In the first 11 months through November, they totaled 18.6 million TEUs, which were nearly unchanged from a year earlier.
By origin, imports from China accounted for 825,634 TEUs in November, down 15.9%, but managed to hold the largest share of the pie. Those from Vietnam were up 31.2% to 233,476 TEUs; from South Korea, down 4.7% to 184,410 TEUs; from Singapore, down 3.4% to 72,226 TEUs; and from Thailand, up 28% to 68,819 TEUs. Containers from Japan were ranked ninth, which plunged 19.4% to 30,013 TEUs.
In November, the U.S. imported a total of 2.22 million TEUs from other countries and regions, down 6.6%.
