The Suez Canal Authority announced the gradual return of mega containerships to the Suez Canal after a two-year hiatus, marked by the transit of the CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin, the largest container freighter to pass through the waterway since 2023.

The ship, operated by CMA CGM, joined the northbound convoy coming from the U.K. and heading to Malaysia. Measuring 399 meters in length, 54 meters in width and 13.5 meters in draft, it can carry 17,859 containers with a net tonnage of 177,000 tons.

It was the ship’s first passage through the Suez Canal and Bab el-Mandeb since Oct. 22, 2023, following regional tensions.
