The Port of Antwerp-Bruges processed 10.32 million TEUs of containers in the first nine months (January-September), up 1.6% year on year.
In the third quarter (July-September), however, container throughput decreased 2.4% to 3.4 million TEUs. “This slowdown is linked to the normalization of container shipping alliances, which brought an end to the temporary overlap between calls in old and new alliances,” the port authority explained. “This led to a clear reduction in congestion, with quicker turnarounds and smoother traffic to the hinterland.” Port of Antwerp-Bruges’ market share in the Hamburg–Le Havre range dropped 0.7 percentage points to 29.8% in the first half (January-June) of 2025, largely because of lack of terminal capacity.
In January-September, total freight traffic was 202.6 million tons, down 3.8%. Bulk cargo fell 12.8% to 66 million tons, while containerized, conventional, Ro/Ro and other general cargo totaled 136 million tons, up 1.3%.
