South Korea traded 345,300 TEUs of containers with other East Asian economies in August, down 5.9% year on year from 366,900 TEUs, according to preliminary statistics compiled by the Korea Customs Services (KCS) reported in local media outlets. Exports grew 2% to 164,700 TEUs, but imports plunged 12% to 180,500 TEUs.
Container movements were weak to all of the destinations but to Malaysia. Containers to Vietnam shrank 7% to 117,400 TEUs, remaining on a downward trend for three months since June, but managed to hold the leading share of the pie. Those to Indonesia fell 12% to 47,600 TEUs, coming in third place; to Thailand, 11% to 45,700 TEUs, in fourth place; to Taiwan, 8% to 31,300 TEUs, in fifth place; to the Philippines, 17% to 21,800 TEUs, in sixth place; to Hong Kong, 8% to 17,000 TEUs, in seventh place; and to Singapore, 8% to 15,600 TEUs, in eighth place. In contrast, exports to Malaysia jumped so notable a 25% to 48,600 TEUs as to finish in second place.
