Japan’s six major ports handled a total of 1.16 million TEUs of oceangoing containers in July, down 0.4%, their first year-on-year contraction in eight months, according to preliminary statistics compiled by the nation’s transport ministry. The total consisted of 574,834 TEUs of exports, up 0.3%, and 587,683 TEUs of imports, down 1.1%.

Individually, Tokyo processed 346,641 TEUs, down 0.1%, comprising 154,304 TEUs of exports, down 1.4%, and 192,337 TEUs of imports, up 1%. Throughput jumped 22.7% to 7,466 TEUs at Kawasaki, of which exports grew a more notable 41.3% to 3,844 TEUs, and imports increased a modest 7.6% to 3,622 TEUs. Yokohama was responsible for 227,280 TEUs, down 4.6%, of which exports shrank 2% to 123,581 TEUs, and imports, 7.5% to 103,699 TEUs. Nagoya exported 116,418 TEUs, up 3.7%, and imported 106,988 TEUs, up 0.2%, for a total of 223,406 TEUs, up 2%. Containers to and from Osaka amounted to 184,378 TEUs, up 5.9%, which were made up of 83,577 TEUs of exports, up 6.6%, and 100,801 TEUs of imports, up 5.3%. Handling 173,346 TEUs, Kobe incurred a decline of 5.2%, of which exports and imports both slid, going down 3.9% to 93,110 TEUs and 6.7% to 80,236 TEUs, respectively.
