Containers from Japan to the U.S. amounted 54,422 TEUs in August (based on volumes at ports of origin), up 6.2% for a year-on-year increase for the second consecutive month, according to Descartes Datamyne.
Direct shipments accounted for 32,779 TEUs in August, down 7.1%, while the remaining 21.643 TEUs were transshipped on the way, up so notable a 35.7% as to increase the percentage of transshipped containers to 39.8%.

Of the transshipped containers, 14,347 TEUs were moved by way of South Korea, up 31.9%. Those carried via China more than doubled, skyrocketing 106.8% to 4,375 TEUs as throughput jumped in Shanghai due to the formation of new alliance. Containers transshipped in Taiwan surged 30.7% to 2,160 TEUs, but those moved via Singapore nosedived 87.4% to 122 TEUs.

By commodity, nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances as well as parts thereof (HS84) amounted to 12,947 TEUs, up 1.5%; vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling-stock and parts and accessories thereof (HS87), 11,055 TEUs, down 3.1%; rubber and articles thereof, 6,720 TEUs, up 41.3%; and plastics and articles thereof, 5,169 TEUs, up 1.1%.

In the first eight months (January-August), vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling-stock and parts and accessories thereof shrank 8.7% owing to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs. In contrast, electricity-related products as well as tire and other rubber products increased.
