Container exports from Asia to Europe surged 16% to 1.81 million TEUs in May, growing year on year for the third consecutive month and setting a new monthly record, according to statistics compiled by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC) from data provided by Container Trades Statistics (CTS). In the first month (January-May), they amounted to 7.95 million TEUs, up 10.5%.
Asia’s exports increased across the board from all regions of origin. Those from China and Hong Kong jumped 15.7% to 1.43 million TEUs; from other parts of North Asia, 11.6% to 160,596 TEUs; and from Southeast Asia, 21.8% to 223,675 TEUs.
They grew across the board to all regions of destination as well, with those to North Europe soaring 17.6% to 1.13 million TEUs; to the Eastern Mediterranean, 14.2% to 353,016 TEUs; and to the Western Mediterranean, 12.9% to 326,418 TEUs.
Meanwhile, imports from Europe to Asia plunged 10.3% to 485,831 TEUs in May, suffering a year-on-year contraction for nine months in a row.
From North Europe, 331,930 TEUs were shipped, down 9.3%; from the Eastern Mediterranean, 76,583 TEUs, down 8.3%; and from the Western Mediterranean, 77,318 TEUs, down 16.6%.
To China, 230,334 TEUs were imported, down 11%; to other parts of Northeast Asia, 120,985 TEUs, down 2.9%; and to Southeast Asia, 134,507 TEUs, down 15.1%.
