The Port of Osaka handled 176,493 TEUs of international containers in May, up 4.3%, year-on-year growth for the fourth consecutive month, according to preliminary statistics compiled by the Osaka Ports and Harbors Bureau.

Exports accounted for 80,114 TEUs, up 5.9%, and imports, 96,379 TEUs, up 2.9%. As for laden containers, 32,279 TEUs were exported, down 2.9%, and 92,381 TEUs were imported, up 0.8%, for a total of 124,660 TEUs. Empty containers amounted to 51,833 TEUs in total, up 16.8%.

In the first five months (January-May), 844,306 TEUs were processed, up 4.2% year on year, which consisted of 381,153 TEUs of exports, up 5%, and 463,153 TEUs of imports, up 3.5%. Looking at laden containers, 155,869 TEUs were exported, down 4.9%, and 449,628 TEUs were imported, up 4.1%, totaling 605,497 TEUs, up 1.6%. Empties totaled 238,809 TEUs, up 11.2%.
