The World Container Index (WCI) quoted 3,543 points in Week 24, which remained nearly unchanged from the previous week but fell 26% from a year earlier, according to Drewry. U.S. President Donald Trump’s pause on import tariffs led to the resumption of U.S.-bound traffic after the initial collapse of trans-Pacific volumes. As such, the index swelled 59% in total in the last four weeks.
Freight rates from Shanghai to New York rose 2% to $7,285 per FEU last week and 67% in the last four weeks, while spot rates to Los Angeles increased 1% last week and 89% in the last four weeks. Prices on the trans-Pacific eastbound route changed marginally amid the fresh injection of capacity. Freight rates from Shanghai to Rotterdam and to Genoa both remained stable in Week 24 at $2,837 per FEU and $4,054 per FEU, respectively.
