The Port of Shimizu in central Japan handled 35,958 TEUs of international containerized shipments in May, up 3.3%, marking the third consecutive month of year-on-year growth, according to preliminary statistics unveiled by the Shizuoka Prefectural Government's Shimizu Port Authority.

In breakdown, 13,657 TEUs of loaded containers were exported, up 6%, and 17,565 TEUs were imported, up 6.6%, while empty containers totaled 4,736 TEUs, down 13.5%.

Domestic containers amounted to 8,606 TEUs, up 12.6%, for a total of 44,564 TEUs, up 4.9%.

In the first five months (January-May), Shimizu processed 163,883 TEUs of oceangoing containers up 1.8%, which consisted of 60,890 TEUs of loaded exports, up 1%, 80,423 TEUs of loaded imports, up 1.6% and 22,570 TEUs of empties, up 4.4%. Domestic containers added up to 46,700 TEUs, up 2.4%, for a total throughput of 210,583 TEUs, up 1.9%.
