Asia's container exports to Europe amounted to 1.6 million TEUs in March, up 10.4% year on year, the first year-on-year increase they had registered in two months, according to Container Trades Statistics (CTS) data compiled by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC).

By origin, China and Hong Kong were responsible for 1.22 million TEUs, up 14.2%, whose double-digit increase led the overall container movements on the trade. Containers from Southeast Asia grew 2.9% to 223,383 TEUs, but those from other parts of Northeast Asia shrank 4.4% to 161,407 TEUs.

Container exports from Asia expanded to all destinations. Those to North Europe went up 9% to 969,708 TEUs; to the Eastern Mediterranean, up 12.5% to 325,224 TEUs; and to the Western Mediterranean, up 12.6% go 308,294 TEUs.

In contrast, Asia's container imports from Europe waned 3.4% to 551,468 TEUs in March, down 3.4% for a year-on-year contraction for the seventh consecutive month.

By origin, imports from North Europe accounted for 380,170 TEUs, down 2.8%; the Western Mediterranean, 96,469 TEUs, down 3.6%; and the Eastern Mediterranean, 74,829 TEUs, down 6.3%.

By destination, ex-Europe imports shrank across the board, with those to China going down 1.3% to 256,857 TEUs; to other Northeast Asian countries and regions, down 2.2% to 127,745 TEUs; and to Southeast Asia, down 7.5% to 166,864 TEUs.
