The Port of Tokyo handled 330,361 TEUs of foreign-trade containers in January, up 6.6%, a year-on-year rise for the 10th consecutive month, according to preliminary statistics unveiled by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG)'s Bureau of Port and Harbor.

Exports of loaded containers plunged 24.9% to 42,085 TEUs, but those of empty containers jumped 16.1% to 91,460 TEUs. Imports of loaded containers surged 12.3% to 195,096 TEUs, and those of empties rose 21% to 1,720 TEUs.

Tokyo processed 16,375 TEUs of loaded domestic containers, down 1.6%, and 19,021 TEUs of empty domestic containers, up 10.4%.

In total, loaded containers accounted for 253,556 TEUs, up 2.9%, and empties, 112,201 TEUs, up 15.2%.
