Japan's 12 major ports handled 3.89 million TEUs of foreign-trade containers in the third quarter (July-September) of 2024, up 0.6% year on year, according to the Tokyo-based Harbor Modernization Promotion Committee.

As for laden containers, exports accounted for 1.19 million TEUs, down 4.6%, and imports, 1.88 million TEUs, up 3.6%. In terms of volume, exports amounted to 21.57 million tons, down 2.5%, and imports, 35.58 million tons, up 3.5%.

Looking at the top five's performances, Tokyo processed 1.05 million TEUs, up 3.6%; Yokohama, 692,773 TEUs, up 2.9%; Nagoya, 642,995 TEUs, down 0.2%; Kobe, 530,449 TEUs, down 3%; and Osaka, 504,818 TEUs, up 1%.

In respect to throughput at the remaining seven, 189,555 TEUs were to and from Hakata, down 7%; 100,733 TEUs to and from Shimizu, up 0.5%; 100,136 TEUs to and from Kitakyushu, down 4.6%;43,084 TEUs to and from Yokkaichi, up 0.5%;17,066 TEUs to and from Kawasaki, down 24.7%; 9,058 TEUs to and from Shimonoseki, down 2.1%; and 8,463 TEUs to and from Chiba, down 24.3%.

Focusing on laden exports more specifically, the top five were responsible for 1.04 million TEUs, down 3.8%. Individually, Yokohama exported 269,492 TEUs, up 0.6%; Nagoya, 256,051 TEUs, down 2.2%; Kobe, 220,570 TEUs, down 4.9%; Tokyo, 201,277 TEUs, down 0.2%; and Osaka, 91,032 TEUs, down 5.1%. Meanwhile, the remaining 149,109 TEU were handled at the other seven, down 9.6%.

Breaking down loaded imports, 1.66 million TEUs were moved to and from the Big Five, up 4.3%, with 575,274 TEUs to Tokyo, up 6.2%; 309,087 TEUs to Yokohama, up 11.4%; 278,249 TEUs to Nagoya, up 0.9%; 272,691 TEUs to Osaka, up 3.4%; and 222,247 TEUs to Kobe, down 3.8%. The remaining seven processed 218,863 TEUs, down 1.3%.
