U.S. container imports from 10 major economies in Asia totaled 1.63 million TEUs in February (based on volumes at ports of origin), up 8% from a year earlier, according to statistics compiled by Descartes Datamyne from data provided by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Having increased year on year for the 18 month in a row, they set a new record high for the month in question. From the previous month, however, they plunged 11.3%. Overall container imports to the U.S. amounted to 2.24 million TEUs, up 5.5%.

By origin, imports from China swelled 9.6% to 938,794 TEUs, holding the leading share of the pie. Those from South Korea grew 16.5% to 201,976 TEUs; from Vietnam, 4.7% to 166,690 TEUs; from India, 24.1% to 73,847 TEUs; and from Taiwan, 7.7% to 71,536 TEUs. Finishing in eighth place, containers from Japan plunged 19.9% to 29,728 TEUs.

Meanwhile, U.S. container exports to the 10 Asian countries and regions slid 11.4% year on year to 463,453 TEUs in January (based on volumes at ports of destination), which improved 3.2% from December 2024.

By destination, 105,427 TEUs were destined to China, down 17.3%; 57,729 TEUs to South Korea, up 6.9%; 49,757 TEUs to Japan, up 3.7%; 49,324 TEUs to Vietnam, up 29.3%; and 46,486 TEUs to India, up 21.4%. The notable shrinkage in containers to China was covered by the favorableness in those to others.
