The World Container Index (WCI) decreased 6% to $2,629 per FEU in Week 9, according to Drewry. From a year earlier, it plunged 25%, falling to the lowest level since May 2024. The composite index was 75% below the previous pandemic peak of $10,377 per FEU in September 2021 but 85% above the average of $1,420 per FEU in the pre-pandemic year of 2019.The year-to-date average was $3,372 per FEU, $489 higher than the 10-year average of $2,882 per FEU, which is inflated by the exceptional 2020-22 COVID period.

Freight rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles decreased 11%, or $411 to $3,477 per FEU, and those from Shanghai to New York, 10%, or $533 to $4,593 per FEU. Rates from Shanghai to Genoa fell 2%, or $90 to $3,747 per FEU, and those from Shanghai to Rotterdam and from Rotterdam to New York reduced 1% to $2,586 per FEU and $2,374 per FEU, respectively. On the other hand, rates from Rotterdam to Shanghai and from New York to Rotterdam increased 1% to $503 per FEU and $835 per FEU, respectively. Meanwhile, rates from Los Angeles to Shanghai remained stable.

Drewry expects rates to continue to decrease next week due to increased shipping capacity.
