Asia’s container exports to Europe expanded 8.8% from the previous year to 18.04 million TEUs in 2024, setting a new yearly record, according to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC), which refers to figures compiled by Container Trades Statistics (CTS)
By origin, containers from China surged 11.9% to 13.99 million TEUs, leading entire container movements on the trade. Those from Southeast Asia picked up 6.5% to 2.39 million TEUs, but those from other Northeast Asian countries and regions fell 9% to 1.67 million TEUs.
By destination, exports to North Europe rose 10.5% to 11.26 million TEUs; to the Eastern Mediterranean, 1.6% to 3.41 million TEUs; and to the Western Mediterranean, 11.4% to 3.37 million TEUs.
Meanwhile, imports from Europe to Asia amounted to 6.24 million TEUs last year. By origin, those from the Western Mediterranean improved 1.2% to 1.03 million TEUs, but those from North Europe shrank 5.1% to 4.3 million TEUs and from the Eastern Mediterranean, 1.1% to 906,401 TEUs.
By destination, containers to China fell 8% to 2.94 million TEUs and to Southeast Asia, 1.3% to 1.87 million TEUs, but those to other Northeast Asian economies swelled 3.8% to 1.42 million TEUs.
In December 2024 alone, Asia exported 1.71 million TEUs to Europe, up 13.7% for a year-on-year increase for three back-to-back months, and imported 507,376 TEUs from Europe, down 10.2% for a year-on-year contraction for four months in a row.
