Container exports to the U.S. from 18 Asian countries and regions amounted to 1.82 million TEUs in December, up 14.6% for a year-on-year increase for the 15th consecutive month, according to statistics unveiled by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC).

By origin, one million TEUs were from China, up 15%; 107,465 TEUs from South Korea, down 1.5%; 57,149 TEUs from Taiwan, up 5.2%; and 50,779 TEUs from Japan, up 1%. Container from Southeast Asia accounted for 466,677 TEUs, up 20.8%, which included 245,844 TEUs from Vietnam, up 23.7%, and 90,404 TEUs from Thailand, up 16%. Exports from South Asia came to 123,493 TEUs, up 16%, of which 96,177 TEUs were from India, up 16.6%.

The JMC statistics, based on Journal of Commerce (JOC) data from the Port Import/Export Reporting Service (PIERS), indicated that in 2024, Asia-U.S. container exports totaled 21.45 million TEUs, which jumped 17.1% from the previous calendar year as those from China, Vietnam and India continued to increase throughout the year. They broke their previous record of 21.01 million TEUs in 2022 to hit an all-time high.

By origin, China was responsible for 11.8 million TEUs, up 16.2%; South Korea, 1.36 million TEUs, up 15.2%; and Taiwan, 661,030 TEUs, up 5%. Exports from Japan grew 7.9% to 670,385 TEUs thanks to briskness in auto-related and rubber products as well as machinery. Containers from Southeast Asia jumped 23.5% to a record 5.38 million TEUs, of which 2.8 million TEUs were from Vietnam, up 29.3%; 1.07 million TEUs from Thailand, up 19.7%; 526,922 TEUs from Indonesia, up 17%; and 441,357 TEUs from Malaysia, up 20.3%. From South Asia, 1.5 million TEUs were exported, up 15.5%, including 1.17 million TEUs from Insia, up 16.8%.
