U.S. container imports from 10 major Asian countries and regions amounted to 1.72 million TEUs in December 2024 (based on volumes at ports of origin), up 13.7% year on year, according to statistics compiled by Descartes Datamyne from data provided by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CPB). They have increased year on year for the 16th month in a row to set a new December record. From the previous month, they picked up 0.2%.

By origin, containers from China rose 16.8% to 988,746 TEUs; from South Korea, 4.1% to 195,737 TEUs; from Vietnam, 12.6% to 171,337 TEUs; from Taiwan, 18.2% to 79,814 TEUs; and from India, 22.5% to 74,468 TEUs. Those from Japan came in eighth place, swelling 2.4% to 34,462 TEUs.

In 2024, U.S. imported 20.31 million TEUs from the 10 Asian economies, up 16.1% from the previous calendar year. From the pre-pandemic year of 2019, there was an improvement of 23.8%.

By origin, imports from China grew 15.4% to 11.62 million TEUs; from South Korea, 21.6% to 2.4 million TEUs; from Vietnam, 25.2% to 2.04 million TEUs; from Taiwan, 6.3% to 907,863 TEUs; and from India, 11.2% to 905,297 TEUs. Those from Japan jumped 12.9% to 446,930 TEUs, finishing in eighth place. From 2019, however, they decreased 8.6%.

U.S. container exports to the 10 Asian countries and regions came to 529,359 TEUs in November last year (based on volumes at ports of destination), up 17.9% from a year earlier and 14.1% from a month earlier.

By destination, those to China went down 3% to 123,726 TEUs; to South Korea, up 8.4% to 58,497 TEUs; to Japan, up 20.3% to 57,753 TEUs; to Taiwan, up 26.5% to 57,550 TEUs; and to India, up 47.3% to 56,377 TEUs.
