The Port of Tokyo handled 358,439 TEUs of foreign-trade containers in September 2024, up 3.3% from the same month of 2023 for six consecutive months of year-on-year growth, according to preliminary statistics unveiled by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG)’s Bureau of Port and Harbor.
As for exports, loaded containers accounted for 66,869 TEUs, down 15.7%, and empty containers, 93,606 TEUs, up 10.9%. Looking at imports, meanwhile, 196,796 TEUs were loaded, up 10.1%, and 1,168 TEUs were empty, down 73.1%.
In September, Tokyo processed 44,484 TEUs of domestic containers, up 7.1%, which consisted of 17,700 TEUs of loaded containers, down 11.9%, and 26,785 TEUs of empty containers, up 24.9%. In total, loaded containers amounted to 281,365 TEUs, up 1.1%, and empty containers, 121,559 TEUs, up 10.3%.
In the first nine months (January-September), Tokyo handled 2.28 million TEUs of loaded foreign-trade containers, up 1.1%, and 784,296 TEUs of empties, up 2.2%. As for exports, 610,359 TEUs were loaded, down 5.6%, and 770,035 TEUs were empty, up 4.1%. Regarding imports, 1.67 million TEUs were loaded, up 3.8%, and 14,261 TEUs were empty, down 48.6%.
Tokyo processed 163,052 TEUs of loaded domestic containers, down 4.1%, and 222,221 TEUs of empties, up 13.1%. In total, loaded containers numbered 2.45 million TEUs, up 0.7%, and empty containers, 1.01 million TEUs, up 4.4%.
