The Port of Shimizu in central Japan handled 46,032 TEUs of containers in August, up 5% year on year, according to preliminary statistics unveiled by the Shizuoka Prefectural Government's Shimizu Port Authority.

Oceangoing containers accounted for 36,450 TEUs, up 1.1%, which consisted of 14,628 TEUs of loaded exports, up 4%; 17,149 TEUs of loaded imports, up 2.6%; and 4,673 TEUs of empties, down 11.5%.

The remaining 9,582 TEUs were domestic containers, up 23.2%, of which 3,177 TEUs of laden containers were shipped from Shimizu, up 15.3%; and 2,296 TEUs to the port, up 17.6%. Empty containers filled the balance of 4,109 TEUs, up 33.9%.

In the first nine months, Shimizu processed 378,044 TEUs, down 0.5%, comprising 296,037 TEUs of oceangoing shipments, down 2.3%, and 82,007 TEUs of domestic shipments, up 6.4%. Shimizu exported 111,304 TEUs of full containers, down 5.9%, and imported 144,129 TEUs, up 1.7%, while empty containers amounted to 40,604 TEUs, down 5.1%.
