Japan’s six major ports handled 1.17 million TEUs of oceangoing containers in July, according to preliminary statistics compiled by the nation’s transport ministry. The total volume was 3.3% greater than a year earlier, a year-on-year increase for four months in a row. Exports accounted for 571,534 TEUs, up 3.3%, while the remaining 594,158 TEUs were imported, up 3.2%.

Individually, Tokyo was responsible for 346,740 TEUs, up 3.5%, which consisted of 156,341 TEUs of exports, up 2.3%, and 190,399 TEUs of imports, up 4.6%. Throughput plunged 16.3% to 6,096 TEUs at Kawasaki after marking double-digit improvements for five straight months, of which, exports decreased 21.4% to 2,725 TEUs, and imports, 11.8% to 3,371 TEUs. Containers to and from Yokohama turned upward, growing 3.4% to 237,988 TEUs, exporting 126,093 TEUs, up 4.9%, and importing 111,895 TEUs, up 1.8%. Nagoya processed 219,028 TEUs, up 3.5%, of which, 112,240 TEUs were exported, up 3.6%, and 106,788 TEUs were imported, up 3.5%. Osaka exported 76,818 TEUs, up 1.6%, and imported 95,755 TEUs, up 4.8%, for a total of 172,573 TEUs, up 3.4%. Kobe handled 183,267 TEUs, up 2.9%, which were made up of 97,317 TEUs of exports, up 4.9%, and 85,950 TEUs of imports, up 0.9%.
