Global container trade grew 5.6% year on year to 15.71 million TEUs in July, according to Container Trades Statistics (CTS). From the previous month, however, it decreased 0.2%. In the first seven months, it swelled 7.1% from a year earlier due to a notable increase in container movement prior to the peak season. The global price index, which was set at a baseline of 100 points in 2008, jumped 57.3%, or 43 points year on year from 75 points to 118 points. From June, the index rose by seven points to 101 points.
Looking at July container movement by region, imports to and exports from the Far East were both favorable, climbing 4.9% to 5.9 million TEUs and 8.1% to 9.66 million TEUs, respectively. Imports to Europe improved 4.9% to 2.97 million TEUs, and exports, 3.6% to 2.33 million TEUs. North America imported 3.07 million TEUs, up 12.9%, and exported 1.14 million TEUs, up 3.9%.
Containers to the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East hiked 2.3% to 1.71 million TEUs, but those from the regions fell 2.9% to 1.2 million TEUs. Central and South America imported 1.02 million TEUs, up 5.3%, and exported 778,101 TEUs, up 1%. Imports to Brazil, the largest market in the region, surged 13.4% to 289,761 TEUs, but exports shrank 1.6% to 231,597 TEUs.
Incoming containers to Sub-Saharan Africa were sluggish, decreasing 8.8% to 670,513 TEUs, but outgoing containers increased 2.1% to 342,265 TEUs. Container traffic was steady both to and from Australasia and Oceania, climbing 4.6% to 373,209 TEUs and 4.1% to 261,559 TEUs, respectively.
