U.S. container imports remained brisk in June, surging 10.4% year on year to 2.3 million TEUs, according to the latest issue of Global Shipping Report unveiled by Descartes System Group. From the previous month, however, they fell 2.1%, the second smallest May-to-June decrease in the previous six years, ignoring import volume performance during the coronavirus pandemic.
In June, combined throughput at the top 10 ports declined 2.9%, or 59,625 TEUs from May. In terms of TEU, Los Angeles registered the largest increase of 33,253 TEUs, or 8.5%, followed by Charleston with a growth of 14,552 TEUs, or 15.9%. In contrast, throughput plunged more severely, by 59,933 TEUs, or 14.7% at New York and New Jersey than any other port, while the second greatest shrinkage of 28,738 TEUs, or 19.2% was marked at Norfolk.
Imports from China remained nearly unchanged, rising a minute 0.1% to 891,456 TEUs, but they plummeted 11.2% from their peak of one million TEUs in August 2022.
