The U.S. imported 1.53 million TEUs of containers from 10 major Asian economies in April (based on volumes at ports of origin), up 9.5% from a year earlier, according to statistics compiled by Descartes Datamyne with data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). They increased 5.5% from a month earlier and 21.2% from the corresponding month of the pre-pandemic year of 2019. The total volume of U.S. container imports was 2.21 million TEUs, up 9.8% year on year.

Among the 10 Asian countries and regions, China was the leading source of U.S.-bound containerized shipments, from which 825,673 TEUs were imported, up 1.6%. China was followed by South Korea, out of which 194,609 TEUs were shipped, up 13%. Coming in third place, imports from Vietnam accounted for 145,092 TEUs, up 32.6%. Finishing in fourth, those from Singapore amounted to 76,947 TEUs, up 26.1%. At the bottom of the top five was Taiwan, from which 56,591 TEUs were moved, up 5.9%. Imports from Japan, ranked eighth, jumped 40.4% to 44,363 TEUs.

In January-April, U.S. container imports from the 10 Asian economies surged 17.5% to 6.14 million TEUs, included in a total imports of 8.72 million TEUs, up 13.8%.
