The combined capacity of containerships diverted to the Cape of Good Hope route is expected to exceed the five-million-TEU line within weeks, according to a recent report by Linerlytica. Avoiding Houthi attacks continues to absorb record newbuilding deliveries.

Containership fleet capacity stands at 29.37 million TEUs now and is estimated to reach 30 million TEUs by the end of June. Although nominal fleet growth has reached 10% year on year, diversions to the Cape of Good Hope has rendered effective capacity growth on the Asia-North Europe, Asia-Mediterranean and trans-Pacific routes at just 3% this year.

Globally, effective capacity on all of the 33 inter-regional linehaul routes tracked by Linerlytica has shrunk 4% since last year, with reduced capacity deployed on the Red Sea-Middle East/Mediterranean route dragging down the overall average, despite the growth in the main east-west trades.
