Japan’s six major ports handled 1.16 million TEUs of containers in September, which increased 1.7% from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). They registered their first year-on-year improvement in six months. Exports grew 4% to 585,440 TEUs, but imports fell 0.6% to 578,532 TEUs.

Individually, Tokyo was responsible for 346,700 TEUs, which rose a mild 3.4%. The total consisted of 163,577 TEUs of exports, up 0.2%, and 183,123 TEUs of imports, down 6.5%. Containers to and from Kawasaki waned nearly as much, going down 3.5% to 7,970 TEUs, of which 4,156 TEUs were exported, down 6.9%, and 3,814 TEUs were imported, up 0.4%. Throughput at Yokohama turned upward, hiking 4.6% to 224,565 TEUs, which comprised 121,186 TEUs of exports, up 7.5%, and 103,379 TEUs of imports, up 1.4%. Nagoya marked double-digit expansions in total, exports and imports, which surged 12.9% to 230,739 TEUs, 14.3% to 120,063 TEUs and 11.5% to 110,676 TEUs, respectively. Osaka processed 172,506 TEUs, down 2.6%, exporting 78,948 TEUs, down 4.1%, and importing 93,558 TEUs, down 1.3%. Shipments to and from Kobe also came back, picking up a minute 0.2% to 181,492 TEUs. Exports climbed 2.5% to 97,510 TEUs, but imports shrank 2.4% to 83,982 TEUs.
