Container exports from Asia to Europe amounted to 1.43 million TEUs in September, according to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC), which has compiled statistics provided by Container Trades Statistics (CTS) of the U.K. Jumping 29.8% from a year earlier, they remained on an upward trend for seven months in a row.

Exports increased across the board from all regions of origin in Asia. Those from China and Hong Kong grew 34.1% to 1.09 million TEUs in total; from Southeast Asia, 2.6% to 176,703 TEUs; and from Northeastern Asia, 40.2% to 159,141 TEUs.

Double-digit improvements were marked in shipments to all destinations. Those to North Europe soared 22% to 879,395 TEUs; to the Eastern Mediterranean, 54.9% to 291,135 TEUs; and to the Western Mediterranean, 34.3% to 255,114 TEUs.

Imports from Europe to Asia, on the other hand, decreased 2.2% to 527,518 TEUs in September, incurring a year-on-year contraction for two back-to-back months.

By region of origin, imports from North Europe shrank 6.2% to 371,693 TEUs and from the Western Mediterranean, 9.2% to 72,787 TEUs. In contrast, those from the Eastern Mediterranean surged a notable 31.7% to 83,038 TEUs.

By destination, containers to China fell 0.8% to 266,158 TEUs; to Southeast Asia, 1.9% to 151,129 TEUs; and to Northeastern Asia, 10.3% to 110,227 TEUs.

In the first nine months (January-September), Asia exported 12.533 million TEUs to Europe, up 5.7%, and imported 4.75 million TEUs, down 6%.
