The U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) has introduced a Semiconductor Alert Mechanism (SAM) to share information in case there are semiconductor supply disruptions, according to the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).

The SAM encourages DOC experts to find and assess semiconductor supply chain bottlenecks. To reduce chokepoint risks, it effectively arrange and use Washington's resources. The mechanism is also designed to discover potential supply chain disruptions as early as possible and expeditiously solve problems in cooperation with trade partners and industry.

The SAM is a framework to which manufacturers and relevant enterprises doing business in the U.S. can report. Reports can be filed easily just by providing information to the SAM's email addresses made by the DOC. Information is not only shared within the U.S. government, but can be used when it contacts with its overseas counterparts as well. If not assuming that information will be shared by parties outside Washington, as such, reporters need to indicate that their information is confidential.
