Container exports from 18 Asian economies to the U.S. plunged 20.7% year on year to 1,582,195 TEUs in May, staying on the decline for nine consecutive months, according to statistics compiled by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC) from data provided by Journal of Commerce (JOC)’s Port Import/Export Reporting Service (PIERS).

Exports from China accounted for 884,994 TEUs, down 18.4%; from South Korea, 99,395 TEUs, down 13.5%; from Taiwan, 58,553 TEUs, down 20.2%; and from Japan, 49,174 TEUs, down 21%.

Containers from Southeast Asia plummeted 27.6% to 367,453 TEUs in total, including 187,356 TEUs from Vietnam, down 27.9%; 73,473 TEUs from Thailand, down 24.8%; 37,441 TEUs from Indonesia, down 34.4%; and 30,601 TEUs from Malaysia, down 27.9%.

From South Asia, 116,381 TEUs were shipped, down 19.3%, including 90,701 TEUs from India, down 17%.

In January-May, 7,091,823 TEUs were traded from Asia to the U.S., which shrank 24.6% from the corresponding five months of 2022.
