Eighty-eight containers bound for Tianjin left Yangshan Port in Shanghai earlier this month, according to local customs authorities. “Manchester Maersk,” a 19,630-TEU feeder vessel, was responsible for the container carriage.

In November 2021, Beijing temporarily relaxed its cabotage regulations as a pilot project, allowing foreign liner services to move containers between Yangshan Port and Qingdao, Tianjin and Dalian. “Manchester Maersk” is the 65th non-Chinese ship run under the project. To develop the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, international waterway transport management and international shipping rules will be applied on a trial basis until Dec. 31, 2024.

Domestic feeder services to and from Yangshan Port are increasing month by month, according to the customs authorities. By the end of May, a total of 16,000 TEUs of containers had been handled. Since the cabotage regulations were eased, foreign shipping lines have constantly been rearranging transit routes. The number of feeder vessels registered with the customs office in Shanghai has grown from 44 to 94.
