China’s container exports were mostly stable in May, according to a report compiled by the nation’s transport ministry. The composite indexes for freight rates were also favorable, although indexes on individual routes were due to differences in supply and demand. The composite China Containerized Freight Index (CCFI) improved 0.4% from the previous month to 952.11 points on average, while the composite Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) declined 2.2% to 984.4 points on average. The CCFI, an indicator for freight rates for containers moved from China on medium- and long-term contracts, was set at 1,000 points on Jan. 1, 1998; the SCFI is for spot rates for container exports from Shanghai that do not include terminal handling charges (THCs), was set at the same points on Oct. 16, 2009.
