The U.S. port of Long Beach handled 573,772 TEUs of containers in January, which plunged 28.4% from a year earlier due to weaker consumer spending, exacerbating inflation and container shifts to the east coast and Gulf ports. Long Beach has suffered a double-digit year-on-year contraction in container throughput for four months in a row.
Imports of laden containers decreased 32.3% to 263,394 TEUs, and exports, 14.2% to 105,623, while empty containers diminished 29% to 204,755 TEUs.
