Indexes were all negative in July-September for exports and imports of oceangoing containers and international airfreight, NX Logistics Research Institute and Consulting said. The think tank, a member of the Nippon Express (NX) group, held a press conference on Monday to detail a survey it conducted in September on short-term trends in corporate logistics. Projecting the indexes will all remain in the negative territory in October-December, however, it envisages that air freight movement will improve from the previous term in both directions, and that oceangoing containers will stay flat in both exports and imports.

The survey was carried out in September among 2,500 major manufacturers and wholesalers. Responses were made by 733 operators. Indexes are calculated by those answered that freight movement will decrease from those answered that it will increase.

The composite index for exports of oceangoing containers was minus nine in July-September, improved from minus 15 in April-June. By destination, double-digit negative indexes were given for exports to other Asian economies (minus 13), to North America (minus 12) and to Europe (minus 11). The composite index is anticipated to level off at minus 9 in October-December. Individually, exports to other Asian economies are expected to mark minus 12; to North America, minus 12; and to Europe, minus 11.

The composite index for imports of international air freight was minus two in July-September and is foreseen to remain unchanged at minus two in October-December. By origin, imports from other Asian economies registered an index of minus one; from North America, minus 11: and from Europe, minus 12 in July-September. They are forecast to score minus two, minus 10 and minus nine in October-December, respectively.
