The average number of days for which freighters stayed at the world's top 20 container ports (based on volumes in 2021) was 2.32 in August, down 3.1% from the previous month, according to the Shanghai Shipping Exchange (SSE). Meanwhile, they were at anchor for 1.68 days on average, down 0.6%.

At nine ports in China, the number of days for which container carriers remained was 1.46, down 16.6% from 1.75 days, and they were berthed for 0.96 days, down 7.7% from 1.04 days. At Qingdao, in particular, containerships stayed for 1.62 days, a significant decrease of 42.8%.

At the other 11 ports, vessels remained for 3.03 days and were anchored for 2.15 days. At the German port of Hamburg, the number of days for which ships stayed surged 16% to 4.86, due to dockworker strikes. Container freighters were at major U.S. ports for much shorter periods of time. They were at Los Angeles for 6.13 days, down 6.6%; Long Beach for 5.71 days, down 9.7%; and New York/New Jersey for 3.99 days, down 20.5%.
