Chinese ports handled 19.44 million TEUs of containers in total last month, up 4.6% from February of last year, according to a preliminary announcement made by the nation’s Ministry of Transport (MOT). Coastal ports were responsible for 17.27 million TEUs, up 4.1%, while inland river ports processed the remaining 2.18 million TEUs, up 9%. From the beginning of the year, a total of 43.6 million TEUs were moved to and from China in January-February, up 2.9% from the same months of 2021, consisting of 38.85 million TEUs to and from coastal ports, up 2.9%, and 4.75 million TEUs to and from inland river ports, up 2.8%.

Looking the top 10 coastal ports’ performances, throughput only increased a minute 1.1% at Ningbo-Zhoushan in February, as measures to prevent infections had been enhanced due to the coronavirus pandemic. Containers to and from the southern ports of Shenzhen and Guangzhou both shrank from a year earlier, down 10.9% and 0.4%, respectively. Foshan, the third-busiest inland river port, did not do well, either, registering a decrease of 8.3% in volume.
