Container exports to the U.S. from 10 major countries and regions in Asia amounted to 1,699,819 TEUs in December last year, growing 0.9% from the same month of 2020 and marking a year-on-year improvement for the 18th month in a row, American research company Descartes Datamyne has unveiled. On a full-year scale, a total of 20,512,331 TEUs were traded on the route, up 19.5% from the previous year, which exceeded the 20-million-TEU line for the first time and set a new yearly record.

In December, containers from China swelled 1.9% to 1,051,226 TEUs and those from Taiwan, 7.1% to 83,926 TEUs, while exports from India jumped 53.9% to 73,926 TEUs. In contrast, container exports from South Korea plunged 14.4% to 159,045 TEUs. Those from Vietnam fell 6.3% to 114,574 TEUs. Exports from Japan shrank a more notable 37% to 24,206 TEUs.

By item, furniture accounted for 315,021 TEUs, up 1.3%, holding the largest share of the pie. As for others, machinery surged 18% to 170,741 TEUs. Electronic appliances hiked 5.6% to 141,090 TEUs. Plastics soared 34.5% to 139,552 TEUs. Toys and sports goods also enjoyed a double-digit rise of 43.8%, totaling 102,519 TEUs.
