The Port of Tokyo handled 271,004 TEUs of loaded oceangoing containers in August, which swelled 9% from the same month of last year. Exports and imports both increased, going up 7.7% to 76,701 TEUs and 9.6% to 194,303 TEUs, respectively. In contrast, empty containers shrank 10.2% to 87,353 TEUs in total.
In January-August, Tokyo processed 2,151,234 TEUs of full containers, which hiked 4.9% from the corresponding months of 2020. Exports accounted for 621,927 TEUs, up 10.8%, and imports, 1,529,307 TEUs, up 2.7%. Meanwhile, empties totaled 687,817 TEUs, down 12.2%.
